An essay I authored that assessed the command in Luke 6 to "love your enemies" from the perspective of ancient reciprocity ethics, and that invoked Marshall Sahlins's taxonomy of reciprocity relations (general, balanced, and negative reciprocity), was queried by Zeba Crook on precisely this point, namely, whether it applied Sahlins's taxonomy to Greco-Roman reciprocity relations without

It is evident from the citations in Stone Age Economics that Sahlins was exposed to the work of certain Marxist-oriented contributors assumptions. This research explores the mediating role of Sahlins’ (1972) three reciprocity norms; negative, generalized and balanced reciprocity, in the relationships between psychological contract breach and employees’ affective organizational commitment and turnover intentions. Sahlins (1972) used these three dimensions to reflect a continuum of reciprocity from negative reciprocity to balanced to generalized reciprocity. Negative reciprocity was characterized as high on equivalence and immediacy of return and low concern for the other. 2009-06-03 Malinowski, 1922; Sahlins, 1972). Generalized reciprocity is the most primal form of reciprocity (Sahlins 1972).

Sahlins (1972) distinguished between generalized, balanced, and negative reciprocity. Using the con-cept of altruism somewhat like Sahlins (1972) did, Fehr and Fischbacher (2003) strove to underscore “human altruism” in their concept of “strong reci-procity” as “a powerful force” (p. 785; see also Fehr, Fischbacher, and Gächter 2002 ).

It occurs when one person shares goods or labor with another person without expecting anything in return. Abstract abstract To add greater theoretical precision to a fundamental construct in social exchange theory – namely, Gouldner's ‘norm of reciprocity’, this study developed a measure of Sahlins' generalized, balanced, and negative reciprocity types and validated its psychometric quality in China. Marshall Sahlins in Stone Age Economics (1972) identified three forms of reciprocity for trade and gift-giving: generalized, balanced, and negative.

Balanced reciprocity features overt concern for Sahlins’s (1965a and b, 1972/74) elaboration of reciprocity and the links between material flow and social relations in primitive economies particularly interests me. Sahlins’s reciprocal theory is based on a ‘primitive’ economical society. Sahlins historia börjar 1969 då grundaren Gunnar Sahlin startar Sahlins Maskin AB som börjar tillverka maskiner och redskap för installation av luftlinje och kabel. While Sahlins’ book is original and provocative, however, it is not likely to revolutionize thinking in the field as much as the recent work by Godelier (1967). Even though it lacks the theoretical scope and scholarly judiciousness of the latter work, it should nevertheless become a minor classic in the literature dealing with ‘primitive’ (or tribal) economic life. Sahlins' more recent sojourn (1967-9) in France provided him with a second opportunity to develop his economic theory along materialist lines—this time in an atmosphere pervaded with the 'structuralism' of Levi-Strauss.
